Protestors for hire? Demonstrators along the Syria-Israel border were paid thousands of dollars by President Bashar Assad's regime to take part in Sunday's riots, Syrian opposition activists charge.

Israeli officials later reinforced the claims, accusing the Syrian regime of encouraging protests along the northern border.

Sunday’s riots were an attempt "to divert attention away from the massacre in Syria,” one official charged. "The Syrians will be held accountable for these events.”

Late Sunday, Syrian officials claimed that 23 people were killed and 350 were wounded after the IDF fired at protestors aiming to rush the border fence earlier in the day. However, the army dismissed the figures, claiming that they were inflated.

Washington-based members of the Reform Party of Syria said intelligence sources close to the Syrian government in Lebanon informed them that the protesters on the Syrian side of the Druze community of Majdal Shams were in fact poverty-stricken farmers paid by the Assad regime.

According to the sources, the farmers migrated over the last few years from drought-stricken northeast Syria to the south. They reached the Israel-Syria border on Sunday in the aims of reenact "Nakba Day" events, the sources said.

The Syrian opposition group claimed that each farmer was promised $1,000 for showing up at the rally and $10,000 to their families if they are killed by IDF fire.

According to the report, the average salary of a Syrian citizen is about $200 per month, meaning that participation in Sunday's demonstration could provide a protester and his family with five months worth of financial relief.

Such tactics used by Saddam'

Opposition activists noted that such tactics were previously used by Iraqi tyrant Saddam Hussein when the Ba'ath Party leader offered a $25,000 reward to the families of Palestinians who died while hurling stones at Israelis during the Intifada.

Reform Party members added that Assad's payments were aimed at diverting attention away from his regime's barbaric oppression of opposition members in the last three months and the killing of more than 1,000 citizens.

The opposition group stressed that while it believes that the Golan Heights belong to Syria, it wishes to return the land through peaceful negotiations.


"If Assad really wanted the Golan Heights, he would walk the same peaceful path Anwar Sadat walked long before him," the group said in a statement.

IDF fears regular Syria protests

IDF officials said that forces along the Syrian border showed restraint Sunday during clashes with rioters aiming to breach the border fence.

“We could have taken the easier route of uncontrolled fire, but we decided to operate in a very limited manner,” one army official said.



Meanwhile, army officials fear that the border with Syria will turn into a regular protest and riot site, similar to weekly Palestinian and leftist demonstrations at West Bank villages.

Military officials say that should riots continue in the area on a regular basis, the IDF will have to change its deployment in the region. “At this time already we have several regiments that are here instead of following their regular plans,” a military source said.

Notably, the border area with Syria also offers greater operational challenges in containing riots compared to similar events in Judea and Samaria. For example, the firing of tear gas across the border is limited by law and cannot be used as a collective means of crowd control.

Government crackdown in Syria reportedly kills 35

The death toll in a government security crackdown in two northern Syrian towns has risen to 35, human rights groups said. Exiled opposition figures said any dialogue now with President Bashar Assad's regime would be a joke.

Rami Abdul-Rahman of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the deaths in the town of Jisr al-Shughour and nearby Khan Sheikhoun included six policemen. The operation is part of a crackdown that began Saturday.

Human rights groups say more than 1,200 people have died in the brutal crackdown against anti-government protesters since March. Assad has coupled military operations with symbolic overtures toward the opposition, including an amnesty for many prisoners and a call for national dialogue.

The activists' reports could not be independently confirmed. The Syrian government has severely restricted the media and expelled foreign reporters, making it nearly impossible to independently verify events there.

Details of the operations in Jisr al-Shughour were also sketchy and attempts to reach residents of the town were unsuccessful, indicating that communications have been cut.

State-run news agency SANA said Sunday four policemen were killed and more than 20 wounded in the area when "armed terrorist" groups attacked government buildings and police stations.

It said the groups have been launching attacks against government buildings since Saturday, setting fire to a number of public and private buildings, cutting off roads and intimidating residents.

At a meeting of Syria's mostly expatriate opposition in Brussels Sunday, leaders said talks with the regime would be "a joke" as long as the violent crackdown continues.

Obeda Nahas, one of the representatives chosen at a two-day Conference of the National Coalition to Support the Syrian Revolution, said any opposition figures who talked to the regime now would not be taken seriously by the Syrian people.

"We can't sit at the table and have some killers with us at the table," he said at a news conference.

Nahas and other representatives renewed calls on foreign governments and the United Nations to increase political and legal steps against Assad's government.

"We want more pressure on this regime, because it doesn't seem to be listening to its own people," he told reporters.

Ausama Monajed, another participant, said opposition figures were working to put together legal cases against the Assad regime in federal courts in the US, several European courts and the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

In Syria, activist Abdul-Rahman and other activists said the Syrian military pulled back tanks from the outskirts of the tense central city of Hama and in southern villages.

A resident of the city, where least 65 anti-government protesters were killed Friday, said the tanks retreated from the outskirts of Hama overnight.

He said the situation in Hama remained "very tense". Residents were conducting a general strike in memory of those previously killed when security forces opened fire on anti-government protesters Friday.

"Most of the shops here are closed, people are grieving and worried," he said by telephone on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals.

The deaths in Hama and reports of tanks headed there had caused new alarm. The city rose up against Assad's father in 1982, only to be crushed in a three-week bombing campaign that killed thousands. Memories of those days are still raw.

Activists on Sunday also said the army withdrew from the villages of Dael and Hirak near the city of Daraa where the uprising against President Bashar Assad's regime began in mid-March.

The military had been conducting military operations in the area for days.

The Local Coordination Committees, which helps organise and document the protests calling for an end to the Assad regime, said a total of 18 people died in Hirak and 12 in Dael since the start of the operations.

Warum sollte man der IDF in diesem Fall nicht glauben? Bei der ersten Erstürmung wurden auch nur die Beine der Protestler beschossen .Die israelische Armee ist definitv glaubwürdiger als so ein paar Muselmanen, die Ungläubige Aufgrund der Taqiyya sowieso regelmäßig anlügen. Ich will natürlich nicht auschließen, dass einige Querschläger vielleicht auch etwas weiter oben getroffen haben.

Vor einer Stunde gab es eine neue Twittermeldung der IDF. 10 der 20 Palis sollen durch die explodierten Minen getötet worden sein. Bleiben also noch 10 weitere, die vermutlich durch Querschläger getötet wurden. Tragisch, aber wohl nicht zu vermeiden, wenn man eine Grenze stürmen will.Die Aufständischen wurden vorher gewarnt. Sie wussten also, dass sie mit "live-fire" zu rechnen hatten.

Gute Frage: Warum nur ist man bei der Ermittlung eines Sachverhalts grundsätzlich skeptisch gegenüber Aussagen derer, die in dieser Angelegenheit selber Partei sind?
