[Links nur für registrierte Nutzer][Monk] received a formidable music education and worked very hard to achieve his distinctive sound. Nor did he withdraw into an isolated musical meditation, away from the world. It took a village to raise Monk: a village populated by formal music teachers, local musicians from the San Juan Hill neighborhood of New York in which he grew up; an itinerant preacher, a range of friends and collaborators who helped facilitate his own musical studies and exploration; and a very large, extended family willing to pitch in and sacrifice a great deal so that Thelonious could pursue a life of uncompromising creativity.
[Links nur für registrierte Nutzer]As his fame grew, it became fashionable to portray him as some sort of noble savage, an untutored genius reaching back to Africa to restore a lost "purity" to jazz. In fact, as the author shows, between the ages of 11 and 13 he studied with a teacher who exposed him to the classical literature, including the works of Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Rachmaninoff and Liszt. At 17, having just missed a scholarship to the Juilliard conservatory, he went on the road accompanying an evangelist; at 22, back in New York, he was leading his own quartet, the forerunner of those with which he would tour the world in the 1960s and 70s, after fame, if not fortune, had finally found him.

"The salient feature of popular music in First World capitalist and Third World neocolonialist societies is the appropriation and imitation of Afro-American musical forms and styles. The Afro-American spiritual-blues impulse - with its polyphonic, rhythmic effects and antiphonal vocal techniques, of kinetic orality and affective physicality - serves as a major source for popular music in the West. This complex phenomenon, the Afro-Americanization of popular music, prevails owing to three basic reasons. First, the rise of the United States as a world power focused international attention more pointedly on native U.S. cultural forms and styles. Second, vast technological innovations in mass media and communications facilitated immediate and massive influence of certain forms and styles upon others. Third, and most important, Afro-American music is first and foremost, though not exclusively or universally, a countercultural practice with deep roots in modes of religious transcendence and political opposition. Therefore it is seductive to rootless and alienated young people disenchanted with existential meaninglessness, disgusted with flaccid bodies and dissatisfied with the status quo."
