Danish Family minister: be fruitful and multiply
The family minister, Carina Christensen, is calling on the nation to increase its ambitions on the homefront in order to help increase the birthrate.
Christensen, who assumed her position in December, noted that birth rates have remained stable at 1.8 children per family for 15 years, but studies have shown that most families would like to have three children.
'That would mean 15,000 more children per year,' she told Berlingske Tidende newspaper. 'And we need them.'
To find out what prevents families from starting larger families, Christensen is planning a nationwide tour where she will visit with families to discuss their everyday lives and what keeps them from increasing their ranks.
