Senior US politicians have warned Serbia of serious consequences if it does not hand over a Serbian basketball player involved in a New York bar fight that left an American in a coma.
New York Senators Hillary Clinton and Charles Schumer demanded in a statement Thursday that Belgrade extradite Miladin Kovacevic, 21, who is accused of beating Bryan Steinhauer in a bar in Binghamton, New York on May 4.
"There would be significant consequences for Serbia if this matter is not resolved," Schumer and Clinton said after meeting with a Serbian representative in Washington.
"We will not be satisfied until Mr. Kovacevic returns to the US to face justice," they said.
Kovacevic, at the time a basketball player at the University of Binghamton, was arrested after allegedly severely beating Steinhauer in the fight, leaving him in a coma that he is only now beginning to emerge from, according to US media reports.
Kovacevic was released after he gave up his passport and posted 100,000 dollars bail.
But the Serbian consulate in New York apparently issued him an emergency passport, allowing him to flee back home.
Washington has pressed Belgrade since then to extradite Kovacevic back to stand trial.
According to a State Department official, on Tuesday a US diplomat in Belgrade warned Serbia that charges would be added against Kovacevic if he does not appear in court in New York by August 2.
"The vice consul for the government of Serbia indicated to the New York court that Kovacevic would appear before the court as required, and we expect Belgrade to honor the commitment," the official said.
According to Serbia's consulate, two diplomats involved in providing Kovacevic with the passport have been recalled and are to be dismissed.
"Serbia's state prosecutor is presently investigating whether or not criminal charges can be brought against them," the consulate said.
