Büyükanıt signals improvement in Turkish-Greek ties
Saturday, January 13, 2007
ANKARA - Turkish Daily News
Chief of General Staff Gen. Yaşar Büyükanıt has described neighboring countries Turkey and Greece as having mutually good intentions in the military sphere.
“Good intentions between the two sides continue in the military area,” Büyükanıt told reporters at a reception late on Thursday. Büyükanıt's remarks came in response to questions from the press about news reports that Greek jets “harassed” Turkish warplanes five times on training flights in international airspace over the Aegean Sea.
“I spoke with the Greek chief of General Staff this morning. You cannot resolve problems in one day. The public opinion in Greece is not the same as that in Turkey,” he added.
Büyükanıt said he was in contact with the Greek Chief of General Staff Adm. Panagiotis Chinofotis and that they had exchanged views with regard to joint meetings under the umbrella of NATO. In November, Büyükanıt paid a rare visit to Greece for talks with Chinofotis.
“There are improvements in ties. The planes cannot approach one another closer than five miles. These are good things, minor steps. You cannot change everything in one day,” he said. “There is a need for patience. These things are not possible through concessions; we should do something in cooperation.”
Simulated “dogfights,” close-range aerial combat in which military jets fly dangerously near to each other and try to force the opposite party to change its route, are a frequent occurrence between Turkish and Greek aircraft. The two NATO allies agreed to work for closer ties between their militaries last year after the May 23 crash between a Turkish and a Greek jet in which a Greek pilot was killed. Following the incident a hotline was set up in July between the two armies in a bid to prevent similar incidents, and Chinofotis visited Turkey the same month.
At the core of the disputes is Greece's claim that its airspace extends 10 miles around its coastline. Turkey recognizes only six miles, arguing that under international law, Greece's airspace cannot go beyond the extent of its territorial waters.

:cool2:
